Coventry Belgrade Mela 2016 once again invites you to celebrate the South Asian arts and culture at the Belgrade.

Free Workshops:
Shake your hips to the latest Bollywood beats, get to grips with the ancient art of dhol and try your hand at classical south Asian instruments with free workshops running throughout the day in B2:
12noon: Yoga
1pm: Learn Bollywood Dancing
2pm: Learn Bharatanatyam Dancing
3pm: Learn to play the Dhol
4pm: Classical South Asian Instruments
5pm: Talk – ‘Colonial Hangover’

Free Daytime Events, 12noon – 6pm

Arts and Craft Stalls:
Whether you’re looking for jewellery, handcrafted items, mendhi designs or the perfect wedding gift, there will be various stalls selling traditional South Asian products located throughout the Foyer.

Children’s Zone:
Located on the 1st floor, families can take advantage of face painting and a soft play area for children. New for 2016 – why not have the kids learn to read and write the alphabet in either Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi or Gujurati?

Exhibition:
‘Colonial Hangover’ is a free exhibition exploring the lasting legacy of the British Empire on Indian identity today. The exhibition will be available to view from the 11th July until the day of the Mela.

Food:
Come and enjoy a selection of delicious South Asian snacks washed down with a cup of desi tea located on the Ground Floor.

Mehndi Bar:
Get to grips with the ancient art of Mehndi with free, interactive demonstrations and take-away designs, from the classical to the contemporary!

Poetry @ The Belgrade Café
Available from 3pm onwards, relax and unwind in the Belgrade Café with free readings from classical Indian poets Bulleh Shah and Rabindranath Tagore.

Indian Film Premiere:
Running in the Western Learning Space throughout the day, ‘Walnut’ is a powerful and moving account of one man’s remarkable journey through the landscapes of dream.

Coventry Belgrade Mela 6pm – 9pm
The focus of the Coventry Belgrade Mela this year is celebrating local talent. In the evening on the Main Stage, South Asian artists from across the region will come together to showcase their various art forms and to represent the diversity of South Asian talent that exists in Coventry today.

From classical Bharatanyam dancing to Dhol, Bollywood folk music to Tabla drumming, this spectacular live show will bring together the best of Coventry’s South Asian arts and artists for one night only in a highly original and exciting live showcase.
