“…hilarious romantic farce.” **** The Public Reviews

Don Gil of the Green Breeches is an exuberant comedy which blends mistaken identity, role-reversal, ghosts, and green trousers.

Doña Juana has fallen for the oldest trick in the book. The dashing Don Martin, the man she thought she was going to marry, has left her for the wealthy Doña Ines. But Doña Juana is not the sort of woman to take this lying down…

She pulls on a pair of green breeches and sets off to Madrid in hot pursuit of Don Martin, assuming the same name he is using to woo his new lover – a strategy which will either cause a change of heart or complete chaos…

Written by Tirso de Molina, this deliciously anarchic and original comedy has been translated by Sean O’Brien, an award-winning English poet, critic and playwright. His prizes include the Somerset Maugham Award, the Cholmondeley Award, the Forward Poetry Prize and the T. S. Eliot Prize.

Director Mehmet Ergen co-founded London’s Arcola Theatre in 2000. It is now one of the most respected arts venues in the UK. His many awards include the Time Out Award for Outstanding Achievement, two Peter Brook Empty Space Awards and a Time Out Award for Best Fringe Production.

Don Gill of the Green Breeches is part of our Spanish Golden Age Season and plays in repertory with Punishment Without Revenge and A Lady of Little Sense. The season will bring to the stage three brand new translations of rarely-seen plays from the last unopened treasure-chest of world drama. This is a significant cultural event in the UK and a major innovation in the history of Golden Age translation and performance.

Running time: 2hrs 25mins including interval.

These plays come to the Belgrade following their premieres by our co-producers at Bath Theatre Royal’s Ustinov Studio, and then London’s Arcola Theatre. The Spanish Golden Age Season is being supported by: Embassy of Spain: Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs

The Public Reviews

“Ergen’s direction is slick and ensures the ever-building chaos never falters” ★★★★

What’s Peen Seen

“Hedydd Dylan is a compelling Don Gil/Doña Juana; she keeps up with the pace and the complexity of the play brilliantly, and her mannerisms bring her roles to life.“★★★

Plays to See

“This new translation of the Spanish is beautiful, lyrical phrases hidden among the deliberate full stops of rhyming couplets.”
