Hansel and Gretel live on the outskirts of society, hungry and poor. Their mother sends them to forage for food on the mean city streets. News soon arrives that the circus has come to town, led by a very sinister Ringmaster, renowned for luring children away from their homes with the intoxicating smell of frying hot dogs…
Sung in a new English translation produced with Kit Hesketh Harvey (Kit and the Widow, BBC Comedy Proms), HighTime bring Englebert Humperdinck’s stunning music to life as you have never seen or heard before. The breathtaking score will be brought to life by a cast of singers whose credits include the Royal Opera House, English National Opera and the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
The production also features a chorus of children from 10 schools across Coventry, who have been given their very first taste of opera thanks to HighTime. Hansel and Gretel is a magical story and a musical masterpiece, and this darkly comic production is sure to inspire both young and old alike.
