2020 Redevelopment Project gets underway

Posted on 19 June 2019

With Oddsocks’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream marking the last show of our Spring 2019 season, Nick Bottom the Builder may be pleased to know he’s not the only construction specialist on-site, as the refurbishment of our Main House auditorium gets underway this week.

The refurbishment – which will extend into our foyers as we “go dark” over the summer – marks the first phase of our 2020 Redevelopment Project, designed to get us prepared for Coventry’s year as City of Culture in 2021, and is being undertaken by Arden Construction.

Scheduled to take place next year, the second phase will be the transformation of our ground floor café and first floor Burbidge Room into a flexible, combined space for eating, drinking and socialising. It is hoped that this change will help to reinforce our long-term financial stability by attracting more patrons to take advantage of our food and drink offer.

The third and final phase will see us take over the nearby Jaguar pub, turning the vacant space into a versatile creative talent hub. Downstairs, a new rehearsal space will be particularly invaluable for our wide-ranging youth, community and talent development projects. There will also be opportunities for the space to be used by external community groups and organisations. Upstairs, a flat will be made available for visiting actors and/or artists to rent, helping to generate additional long-term income for the theatre.

2020 Redevelopment Project

We’re extremely grateful to Coventry City Council, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) for their generous support so far, and to Coventry City of Culture Trust for their help in securing initial funding for the project. Now we need your help with raising the remaining funds needed to take us up to our £4.8 million target.

There are lots of ways that you can get involved in our Play Your Part campaign, either as an individual or as an organisation. Ways to support us include naming a seat in our newly refurbished auditorium, or sponsoring a step in our café.

By donating just £5, you can also choose to enter our monthly Play Your Part Lottery, giving you a chance to win 20% of the total lottery donations for that month. Full terms and conditions can be found on our Support Us page.
