Belgrade Young Critics Returns for 2019-20

Posted on 16 May 2019

Calling all young people with a passion for live theatre!

Are you a budding reporter, curious blogger or podcast fanatic? Would you like to make videos or write reviews of the exciting theatre happening in your city?
After launching in 2018, the Belgrade Theatre’s Young Critics scheme offers young people aged 16-23 the chance to gain an insight into the world of arts journalism, keeping up-to-date with the latest theatre news, reviewing our shows and meeting and interviewing some of the people involved in bringing them to the stage.

As part of the package, you’ll get to join us for the press nights of our home-produced shows, experiencing the buzz of a theatrical premiere alongside professional writers and reviewers. You’ll get the opportunity to add your own voice and opinions to conversations around our shows, and have your content shared across the Belgrade’s social media channels, reaching over 30,000 followers on Twitter, and over 20,000 on Facebook.

You’ll also get to take a look behind the scenes of some of our productions, and get an insight into the workings of a communications department in a busy theatre – including managing social media channels, working with reviewers, artists and journalists, advertising and spreading the word about the theatre’s work.

Who we are looking for

We’re looking for enthusiastic individuals aged 16-23 who are passionate about the arts. Successful applicants will have a nose for great stories and new experiences, and a drive to share those with other people. You’ll be confident in forming your own opinions and presenting them to other people, and you’ll need to demonstrate flair and creativity in your chosen medium – but how you share your ideas is entirely up to you!

You don’t need to be an expert in writing or theatre – we’re keen to see a wide range of talent and responses, so whether you’re keen to film audience reactions or put together Instagram stories, we want to hear from you!

What we expect from you

Thoughtful responses
We don’t want you to tell us what you think we want to hear. This is a chance for you to share your honest opinions with us and develop your own critical voice.

Quick turnarounds
Many of our touring shows will only run for a few days, so we need people who can get their responses up online within a day or two of seeing a show, in order for us to share it with our followers while it’s still fresh and relevant.

Commitment
Every year, the Belgrade Theatre produces a number of its own shows in addition to hosting a range of touring productions. While we understand that not everyone will be able to attend every show, we do expect you to come and experience all of our home-produced work. Usually, these shows will run for a little longer than touring productions, so even if you can’t make the press night, we should be able to fit you in later in the run. A list of dates for your diary is given below.

Dates for your diary

Stardust – 7pm, Mon 16 Sep
A Bollywood-inspired musical from Bring on the Bollywood creators Phizzical, presented in association with the Belgrade Theatre
