Cats-sting announced for Puss in Boots

Posted on 29 October 2019

If you’ve been keeping up to date with our panto stars’ hunt for a crafty cat to take the title role in Puss in Boots, you’ll know that finding a feline both fearless and fashionable enough to join their squad has proved something of a challenge.

Following a fruitless search at Birmingham’s Kitty Café, the Puddings (Simon and Matilda, that is) went back to the clawing board, turning their attention away from the animal kingdom and towards the human one.

As a result, we’re delighted to be welcoming back Joanna Thorne, who starred as the handsome prince in last year’s panto, Sleeping Beauty. We can’t wait to see her join the squad and take on the evil ogre who’s been busy bothering the villagers of Baggy Bottom on the Bog!

Also joining the cast as Princess Sophia will be Miriam Grace Edwards, who has previously appeared in a number of our alternative B2 pantos, including last year’s Over the Top. As usual writer and director Iain Lauchlan will be taking on the role of Dame, this time playing Matilda Pudding alongside comedy co-star Craig Hollingsworth as her son Simon.

Best known as the writer of BAFTA-winning kids’ show The Tweenies, Iain Lauchlan has been working in the entertainment industry for over 40 years, working on a range of kids TV series including Playschool, Fingermouse, Playdays, Storytime and Fun Song Factory. Puss in Boots will be his 25th pantomime at the Belgrade Theatre.

Completing the cast will be David Gillbrook as King Colin, Aimee Louise Bevan as Fairy Flutterby, Peter Watts as the ogre’s horrible henchman Victor Grabbit and Ema Astarloa, Dylan Jones and Daniel Teague in ensemble roles, all supported by a Junior Chorus of brilliant local kids aged 9-16.

Featuring all the amazing sets, colourful costumes and seasonal silliness that make a trip to the Belgrade panto an unmissable festive treat, this thrilling adventure tail promises to make Christmas in Coventry the cat’s pyjamas. Tickets are already selling fast, so there’s no time to paws in getting hold of yours!

Puss in Boots shows at the Belgrade Theatre from Wednesday 27 November until Saturday 11 January. Book now.
