Coventry shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2021

Posted on 19 July 2017

Last week we had the amazing news that Coventry has been shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2021, along with Paisley, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland and Swansea.

Having backed the bid from the start, we are delighted with the news. Hamish Glen, Chief Executive of the Belgrade Theatre said,

“This is tremendous news for Coventry and the residents of the city. We are very proud to see the growth and investment in the city so far as a result of the bid and excited for the opportunities it presents going forward. This announcement puts us one step closer to winning the bid, which not only means a £3million investment by Heritage Lottery Fund, but many additional benefits for the city”.

In fact, The Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has estimated that the City of Culture has boosted Hull’s local economy by £60 million across the year, and nine out of 10 Hull residents have attended or taken part in a cultural event in the city as part of the 2017 celebrations.

“For the Belgrade Theatre, it would give us a unique opportunity to expand our programme, reach new audiences and attract the very best artists, theatre companies, writers and directors to Coventry. That’s great for the city and its residents because a vibrant arts scene enhances the quality of life for everyone living and working here. Coventry doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves as a diverse, ambitious and creative city. It’s time for that to change and we are determined to do whatever we can to win the overall bid for City of Culture.”

The Belgrade Theatre is committed to telling the stories of Coventry, supporting local artists through the Springboard Initiative, providing opportunities for young people to participate in Arts and supporting Coventry’s growing elderly community – without the support of our audiences we would be unable to do this. And its work like this that makes Coventry deserving of the title of UK City of Culture.

You can support the Belgrade Theatre and Coventry’s bid by:

  • Donating towards the charitable activities of the Belgrade Theatre Trust
  • Following @Coventry2021 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The shortlisted areas will now submit a final bid, by the end of September, with the winner being announced in December.

The Belgrade Theatre Trust (Coventry) Ltd is a registered charity (no 219163). All the money given, raised or earned is not distributed as profit, but kept and reinvested back into our work.
