Family Fun Day

Family Fun Day February 2018

Posted on 23 February 2018

It’s been a busy week here at the Belgrade with lots of things going on during the half-term break, including the return of our regular Family Fun Day. On Wednesday 21 February, hundreds of children and their families arrived at the theatre to take part in a whole host of free activities running throughout the day.

From 10.30am, visitors began to get creative with assorted craft activities themed around the current run of Birmingham Stage Company’s Awful Auntie, as well as our forthcoming production of Julia Donaldson’s What the Ladybird Heard. As well as colouring-in pictures for both shows, there were also opportunities to make a paper plate ladybird, or to cut-out and keep an owl mask, inspired by awful Aunt Alberta’s pet owl Wagner.

At one point, we even had a surprise visit from Wagner himself – aka puppeteer Roberta Bellekom, who couldn’t resist the lure of our craft tables, even as a grown-up! What a hoot!

Elsewhere, there was a chance to win some free tickets to see Awful Auntie on our Main Stage by hunting for missing ladybirds in our Family Trail, as well as an opportunity to try on some real stage costumes from past productions at our dressing-up station.

During the afternoon, our drama leader Lucy ran some hands-on games upstairs in the Burbidge Room, as well as storytelling sessions, reading What The Ladybird Heard, What the Ladybird Heard Next, and Dear Zoo.

Things wrapped up with an exciting insect-handling session from Coventry entomological company Gribblybugs. Minibeast expert Tim introduced us to a range of crazy creepy-crawlies, including a giant African land snail, Madagascan hissing cockroaches, a giant millipede, a couple of stick insects and a Chile rose tarantula!

We loved seeing all your beautiful artwork too, so here’s a selection of what was left behind. Thanks to everyone who took part – see you again next season!
