Podcast: Creating Crongton with Corey Campbell & Esther Richardson

Posted on 23 January 2020

With Janice Okoh’s The Gift now showing on our B2 stage, in this week’s podcast, we’re diving into rehearsals for Crongton Knights, which premieres in Coventry from 8-22 February before heading out on a UK tour.

The show is produced by the team behind 2019’s sell-out adaptation of Noughts and Crosses, the second of four planned productions aimed at young audiences to emerge from a consortium between the Belgrade Theatre, Pilot Theatre, Derby Theatre, York Theatre Royal and Mercury Theatre Colchester.

The play has been adapted by Emteaz Hussain from Alex Wheatle’s Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize-winning YA novel, and is co-directed by Pilot Theatre’s Artistic Director Esther Richardson (director of Noughts and Crosses ) together with our very own 2021 Co-Artistic Director Corey Campbell, whose immersive production Club 2B enjoyed great success at the Belgrade over Christmas.

Ahead of the show’s opening, we spoke to Corey and Esther to find out more about how they’re realising the story on stage, and life as an artistic director. Listen in to our latest podcast below.

Crongton Knights shows at the Belgrade Theatre from 8-22 February. Tickets are available to book now.
