Public Knit-In: Help make twiddle muffs for our relaxed panto

Posted on 28 November 2019

Following the amazing success of last year’s call-out for local knitters to make and donate twiddle muffs for our relaxed panto performance, this year, we’re calling for people to take part in an all-day public knit-in on Thursday 19 December ahead of our relaxed showing of Puss in Boots.

Last year, crafty Coventrians came together for our first ever festive knit-in, creating sensory aids known as twiddle muffs, which were donated to audience members at our relaxed performance of Sleeping Beauty. We were bowled over by the generosity of everyone who got into the true spirit of the season by giving up their time and yarn to help out, so this year, we’ve decided to run an even bigger and better event, inviting volunteers to drop in any time from 11am-7pm on the day.

Specially adapted to provide an open and welcoming environment for all, relaxed performances are aimed at those who prefer a more laid-back theatre experience with freedom to move around and make noise, including those with Autistic Spectrum conditions, sensory and communication disorders, learning disabilities and dementia. Changes made include slight alterations to sound and lighting, additional staff members on hand to support, and a “chill-out zone” where people can go if they feel they need to take a break from the show.

Made with sensory attachments such as bobbles and buttons, a twiddle muff is a soft, therapeutic aid which can help to minimise anxiety and/or provide stimulation for restless hands, enabling people with certain conditions to relax and enjoy the panto more fully.

Supporting this year’s knit-in will be the Belgrade’s resident Craft On – Needlecraft for Wellbeing group, who will be bringing along a selection of ready-made muffs, meaning that even less confident knitters or those with less time to spare can still join in by helping to stitch on the attachments.

The knit-in will be held in our Burbidge Room on Thursday 19 December, with those interested in taking part invited to drop in from 11am-7pm. For more information or to express your interest in attending, please contact or call 024 7684 6702.

Featuring all the amazing sets, colourful costumes and seasonal silliness that make a trip to the Belgrade panto an unmissable festive treat, this thrilling adventure tail promises to make Christmas in Coventry the cat’s pyjamas. Tickets are selling fast, so there’s no time to paws in getting hold of yours!

Puss in Boots shows at the Belgrade Theatre from Wed 27 Nov until Sat 11 Jan, with the relaxed performance taking place on Thursday 9 January. Tickets are available to book now.
