Puddings at the Kitty Café – Hunting for cats to cast in Puss in Boots

Posted on 18 October 2019

Festive fare might not be on the menu many places yet this year, but Birmingham’s Kitty Café has been serving Christmas Puddings early thanks to a visit from the stars of our upcoming panto, Puss in Boots.

Bravely venturing far beyond their home in Baggy Bottom on the Bog, mother-and-son team Matilda and Simon Pudding set off for the second city in search of a fearless feline to join their fight against the evil ogre who’s been terrorising their village.

Banana milkshakes in hand, the Puddings began their hunt for a top banana specimen as hopeful cats came out to meet them, putting in their bids to take the title role in Puss in Boots. Any cat cast would need to be a triple threat – fashionable, ferocious and fast-thinking, able to cook up cunning plans on its paws.

Unfortunately, it simply wasn’t to be. Dashing as they were, it turned out that all the cats at Kitty Café were far too easily distracted by Dreamies to be trusted with feats of daring-do. The quest continues…

Showing from Wednesday 27 November until Saturday 11 January, this year’s pantomime will be the first time Puss in Boots has been performed at the Belgrade Theatre for Christmas since 1991.

Once again written and directed by Iain Lauchlan, who stars as Dame Matilda Pudding alongside comedy partner in crime Craig Hollingsworth as Simon, the show will feature all the amazing sets, crazy costumes and seasonal silliness that make a trip to the Belgrade panto an unmissable Christmas treat each year.
