Sew Happy! BPS receives state-of-the-art sewing machine

Posted on 13 June 2018

With Wednesday 13 June marking National Sewing Machine Day, we wanted to take the opportunity to show off a brand new, state-of-the-art sewing machine that has been very generously lent to us by manufacturers Janome.

Temporarily given to our busy wardrobe department free of charge earlier this year, the machine is already being put to use on the numerous costumes made at our Belgrade Production Services workshop on Red Lane.

Increasingly unique as a facility on this scale attached to a specific theatre, Belgrade Production Services not only create the costumes and sets for all of our in-house shows, but also work on major productions throughout the UK and even further afield, helping to generate revenue which goes back into supporting the important work we do at the Theatre.

Recent BPS set-building projects have included the UK tours of Titanic and The Last Ship, while external projects for the wardrobe team have included the New Wolsey pantomime in Ipswich and The Baraem, a play performed in Doha in the Middle East.

Head of Wardrobe Margaret Lock said: “We’re thrilled to have received this amazing machine from Janome and we’re really grateful to them for their generosity in lending it to us. It’s going to make a big difference to us once we hit our busiest season, with home-produced shows like We’ll Live & Die in These Towns and the ever-popular Belgrade pantomime now on the horizon.”

Moreover, it’s already being put to use: work is currently underway to finalise costumes for our Read All About It! performance takeover of the Coventry Evening Telegraph Building. Running 10-14 July, the show incorporates all of our youth and community drama groups, as well as professional performers from Mercurial Dance, bringing the total cast number to around 90 people! Plenty to keep them busy, then!

If you fancy a sneaky peek behind-the-scenes of Read All About It! at BPS, make sure you follow our Coventry City of Culture Instagram takeover this week. Tickets to the show are available to book now.
