The Stage is Set - Prepare to go Behind the Net Curtains

Posted on 16 May 2019

With our four-day Connectivity and Community series now underway to mark the Coventry and Warwickshire Year of Wellbeing in 2019, our Elders Company are almost ready to present their play Behind the Net Curtains to the public.

Devised and developed by the company, Behind the Net Curtains sets its scene at a 100th birthday party, telling the intertwining stories of a group of guests gathering to mark the occasion. The show will be performed at 6pm on Thursday 16 and 12pm on Friday 17 May, with a dementia-friendly performance at 2.30pm on Saturday 18 May.

Since rehearsals began in January, Elders Company and Belgrade Arts Gym member Margaret Emerton has been blogging about her experiences of taking part in the project. In her final blog, she looks forward to sharing their work with audiences.

Behind the Net Curtains

‘Behind the Net Curtains’ – all life is there to see and so it is with our play.

After four weeks of intensive rehearsal the scenes are set and the lines are learnt (although sometimes they seem to slip away).

Now comes the hard part – putting into practice all that we have learned. So many skills and techniques: importantly the way we breathe, the intonations of our voice, the way we walk and hold ourselves. All we have to do is use them.

We have our dress rehearsal and tech rehearsals to come, the final pieces of the jigsaw. And then we go live for four performances: the final chapter in our journey.

In October last year we were invited to join the Elders Company. We were a group of individuals. Today we are the Elders Company.

Along the way we have all gained more confidence, learned new skills and formed new friendships. We have had lots of fun and laughter.

So how is the cast feeling now? Nervous, excited, anxious. Ready to show the world, or at least Coventry, what a group of Elders can achieve.

We couldn’t have done this without the brilliant help and support of our director and assistant director, Orla and Greg, our stage manager and assistant stage manager Charlene and Anne, Chloe, our designer, and of course, Alice (Strategic Manager – Arts Gymnasium ).

Thanks everyone that have helped us on this journey for giving so much of yourselves.
