Under the Umbrella gets Chinese translation via The Difference Engine

Posted on 6 February 2019

As part of our efforts to improve accessibility and welcome new people into the theatre, we’re pleased to announce that audiences will be able to enjoy our forthcoming production of Under the Umbrella in Simplified Chinese thanks to Talking Birds’ captioning app, The Difference Engine.

Created to help make events and performances more accessible to people who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or partially sighted, The Difference Engine works by delivering captioning or audio description direct to the mobile devices of any audience members who feel they would benefit from its use. To access captions during a show or event where the system is running, simply follow these links to download the software from the Google Play or iOS stores, depending on whether you’re an Android or iPhone user.

Previously used in our Read All About It! performance takeover of the Coventry Evening Telegraph building in July 2018, as well as by a range of companies including Graeae, Complicité, Milk Presents and Derby Theatre, The Difference Engine was an Innovation Award finalist in The Stage Awards 2019.

More recently, the technology has been adapted to provide captions in other languages, something that the Belgrade will be incorporating into performances of Under the Umbrella, with both English and Simplified Chinese subtitles available as required.

Watch the video below for a preview of how The Difference Engine works.

Presented by the Belgrade Theatre in partnership with Yellow Earth Theatre as part of Tamasha’s IGNITE programme, Under the Umbrella makes its world premiere in Coventry 2-16 March 2019. Tickets are available to book now.
