Posted on 14 February 2019

Planning a romantic night out for Valentines Day? How would you feel about your parents choosing a date for you?

While some people might go looking for love by swiping right on Tinder, for others, finding a potential spouse means browsing dating profiles in a physical marriage market – a phenomenon which has exploded in China over the last few years.

In Under the Umbrella, 27-year-old Wei’s mother pays a visit to the Guangzhou marriage market on her behalf, worried that she’ll be labelled a “leftover woman”. Find out more when Under the Umbrella makes its world premiere at the Belgrade 2-16 March 2019.

Take a look at what the cast of Under the Umbrella have to say about how dating in China is explored in the play.

Under the Umbrella is presented by the Belgrade Theatre in partnership with Yellow Earth Theatre as part of Tamasha IGNITE programme, supported by Arts Council England’s Sustained Theatre Grant.
