Volunteers Week: Interview with Belgrade volunteer Colin Tysall

Posted on 6 June 2018

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK, taking place from the 1- 7 June. At the Belgrade we are fortunate to have a host of wonderful volunteers working in a wide variety of roles to help us continue spreading the magic of theatre.

In the spirit of Volunteers’ Week we would like to give a special mention to the amazing Colin Tysall, who you may have seen front of house as a volunteer usher or even centre stage in various productions by our Belgrade Arts Gymnasium: Shine On group. Since childhood, Colin has regularly visited the theatre and quickly developed a curiosity for how the theatre operated. In 2012, he joined our Shine On community drama group, seizing the opportunity to develop his acting abilities and focus on his passion for performance.

Part of our Community and Education programme, Arts Gymnasium uses theatre and arts activities to contribute to the quality of life and positive well-being of people aged 50 and over. Find out more about Arts Gymnasium here

Here is what Colin had to say about his involvement:

_“Shine On gave me the opportunity to be involved in other performance companies such as Imagineer and Highly Sprung, it has really opened up my life in performing. I was a choir boy as a youngster and hated being dragged up to sing, Shine On has made me view performing in a positive light and I’m in control.” _

Equally interested in what goes on behind the scenes, Colin was quick to apply for a voluntary usher position at the Belgrade shortly after his first Shine On production.

Colin commented on his five years of ushering experience, saying:

“It has really changed my life, and to a certain extent has helped overcome my shyness. This has been one of the things that got me communicating with people again and I’ve made some lovely friends here, which is why I will always support the Belgrade.”

We would like to thank Colin and all our other volunteers for their outstanding contributions to the theatre.
