Five years ago the Belgrade Theatre reopened to the public following a £14 million redevelopment which saw the creation of B2 and the refurbishment of the existing listed building. Now we’re celebrating five glorious years of success at the Belgrade with a number of exhibitions and events which you can get involved in.
Throughout the theatre there will be various goings on during consecutive Saturdays in September including backstage tours, an exhibition of production photographs from the last five years, screenings of films created by our Community & Education Company and a special Gala Evening.
The Gala Evening will see Artistic Director Hamish Glen and Associate Director of the Belgrade Community & Education Company, Justine Themen take to the Main Stage to discuss the journey the theatre has been on and what the future holds. The evening also includes tickets to see either 20th Century Boy on the Main Stage or Fragile in B2, followed by a post-show reception and party with live music from five-piece band, The Kustom. To book and pay for your tickets, please call the Box Office on 024 7655 3055 and quote Gala.
You can find out what others think of the Belgrade in our Human Library, a film featuring stories and comments from friends of the Belgrade, audience members, Belgrade staff and actors and directors who have worked with us.
We also want to know what the Belgrade means to you. You can tell us by leaving us a message about your first memory of the Belgrade, why you love coming here and what your hopes are for our future on specially built memory trees that will be in the foyer throughout September.
To mark the occasion we will also be inviting children who were born in 2007 to be nominated by their parents and entered into a draw to win one of five special Golden Tickets to the Belgrade Theatre. Each ticket will allow the winner to come to the Belgrade five times every year, for the next five years. And as a special treat, they can even bring a parent or guardian with them.
All we ask is that the winners keep in touch with the Belgrade after their visit and let us know what you thought of your visit so that we can tell other people about your experience. To enter, simply complete the entry form, which can be collected from the Box Office between 1-20 September 2012 and hand it in to theatre staff, or post it to us at 5 5s for 5, Belgrade Theatre, Belgrade Square, Coventry CV1 1GS.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is also creating a special exhibition board that will provide a snapshot of the Belgrade since opening in 1958. It will be on display at the Herbert’s Covered Court every Tuesday to Saturday throughout September from 10.30am – 3.30pm and will include early photos of the theatre and its official opening by the Duchess of Kent, newspaper cuttings and information about the theatre’s Artistic Directors and actors who have worked with us over the years. The information will be curated by the Herbert Art Gallery from the Belgrade’s extensive archive material, all of which is stored at the Herbert’s History Centre.
