All Belgrade productions and many visiting productions are supported by captioning or sign language interpreters and are also audio-described. We also have access to large print, Braille and audio versions of our brochure available on request.
Age recommendations and suitability
The Belgrade Theatre presents a variety of productions that reflect a range of subject matters for a broad range of audience types. These subjects often reflect contemporary life and as a result may present a range of real life situations including scenes of an adult nature, bad language and violence.
On occasion we feel it appropriate to give guidance and shows which require clarification will have an age recommendation on it.
An age recommendation can mean that the show may contain bad language, scenes of an adult nature or violence. If any of these issues is of concern to you please consult one of our box office staff who will be able to advise you further.
Access Supported Performances
When providing Access Supported Performances, the Belgrade considers each of the following questions:
1) How long is the show running at the Belgrade Theatre
2) How much spoken word there is in the show
3) What is the target audience
4) Which Access Support would be appropriate
1) How long is the show running at the Belgrade Theatre?
This is a consideration as the personnel who deliver each type of Access Support need several days’ preparation to be able to deliver the service effectively: they need to see a performance, at least twice, then prep and rehearse it, then deliver it. The upshot of this means that a show needs to be performed at the Belgrade for a minimum of at least 6 days.
2) How much spoken word is there in the show?
As we do not know the answer to this question when we book the production in, we take advice from the Producers.
3) What is the target audience?
This is another important consideration as to which Access Support to provide.
4) Which Access Support would be appropriate?
The answers to points 2) and 3) above will inform our decision. The more spoken word in a production the more the show could naturally lend itself to captioning. The less wordy a production this could possibly lend the show to being signed, e.g. a show aimed at younger children or musical shows.
With regard to audio description, the theatre endeavours to provide this service for all shows lasting at least 6 days.

Many of our productions are audio described. Please note that audio descriptions usually commence 15 minutes prior to the performance. Headsets for the description may be reserved at time of booking.
We can provide information in large print, Braille, on cassette or CD.
Guide and hearing dogs are most welcome, please ask about a guide dog space when booking.
Many of our productions are sign language interpreted. An infra-red hearing system is installed in both theatres. Receivers and headsets are available at Box Office and may be reserved at the time of booking.
Captioning is a way of converting the spoken word into visible text, with captioners trained by Stagetext. This provides people with a hearing loss access to live performance.
In the Main Stage, we have up to 6 seats in Box E which are available for wheelchair users. In B2, there is space for 6 wheelchair users 4 on the ground floor and 1 on each balcony.
An accessible toilet is available in the lower foyer. There is a lift next to the Café Bar.
Touch Tours are a tactile exploration of set and costumes for the visually impaired and their families.
