The BBC documentary ‘When Romeo Met Juliet, which was filmed in Coventry and at the Belgrade Theatre last year, will be broadcast on BBC2 every Friday for three weeks from 4 June at 9pm.
The show follows Paul Roseby, artistic director of the National Youth Theatre, as he tries to bring together kids from two local schools in a performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the Belgrade's B2 auditorium.
In this unique artistic experiment, each school is cast as one of the two feuding families: Romeo and his Montague clan come from a Coventry city centre comprehensive (Sidney Stringer) while Juliet and the Capulets are from a Catholic school in the city's northern suburbs (Cardinal Newman).
Assisted by husband and wife duo Adrian Lester and Lolita Chakrabarti, who are acting as mentors to the two groups, Paul has eight weeks to bring these two very different schools together to perform in front of a live audience in our B2 auditorium. Can the kids overcome their aversion to Shakespeare and cut it as actors? Tune in to find out…
