Belgrade Theatre Community & Education Company

Community & Education

The Belgrade’s work with young people and local communities is an integral part of the theatre’s artistic programme. Through the work of the Community & Education Company, it seeks to give a voice to the diverse communities of Coventry through the use of theatre and other art forms. It runs a range of community arts activities both at the theatre and in venues across the city. The Company’s work is based on the premise that drama is a powerful tool for the building of creative, confident individuals, and communities with a strong sense of local identity. As such, the work can make a powerful contribution to the city’s regeneration agenda.

The community programme is central to the theatre’s work in the city, raising levels of access and participation in the arts, particularly targeting disadvantaged or under-represented groups. This includes running workshop programmes in venues across the city, taking community performances out into community venues, running activities that specifically target the city’s Black and Minority Ethnic Communities and forming new partnerships to push forward new ways of working.

The Belgrade has a strong tradition of arts in the community and arts in education, dating back to the 1960s, when it was the first theatre to establish a Theatre in Education Company. The theatre continues to lead the way in cutting-edge and artistically challenging community arts practise.

Some of the highlights of the work include the In Our Own Words festivals of work – celebrating the range of the output of the company from professional work for young people to film, and large-scale youth theatre productions.
