We're looking for emerging, Midlands-based writers to work on our digital TV series

Calling all emerging writers based in the Midlands! We’re looking to assemble a local team to form the writers’ room for our upcoming digital TV series, SeaView.

What is SeaView?

Set to premiere in 2021, SeaView is an urban, science-fiction drama, drawing on the experiences of working class communities in the West Midlands. Inspired by a true story, the series follows Steven, a young man destined for great things who finds himself trapped by the destiny of others.

Tormented by his gift for prophecy and haunted by his dreams, Steven tries to break the cycle of lies, crime and violence that has ensnared his family, but finds himself in an impossible position. The way seems unchangeable, the decisions they make irreversible.

The series will make its debut with an exclusive screening at the Belgrade Theatre in 2021, followed by an online release. The project is the product of a new collaboration between the Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Strictly Arts Theatre Company, Fix 8 Films, Run Home Productions and Audio Bassment that will see theatre and film production companies work together in groundbreaking new ways.

What are we looking for?

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our first writers room ahead of Coventry’s year as City of Culture in 2021. Each writer will get the chance to work on one episode, alongside our Co-Artistic Director Corey Campbell and playwright Sophie Ellerby. Each writer selected will receive a fee of £500.

We are looking to recruit up to seven of the region’s most exciting up-and-coming talent for this project, so we want to hear from emerging writers looking to take the next step in their careers. The group will support new writers to learn and develop key screen-writing skills, providing them with a space to imagine and create their own scenes.

Our writers’ room will be based at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, and you must live in the Midlands  in order to apply.

The writers room will run from 6.30pm-8.30pm every Thursday from Thursday 16 July 2020 – Thursday 15 October 2020, with the final read-through taking place during the week commencing Monday 19 October 2020.

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the first few weeks of the Writers’ Room will be held over the digital conference panel Zoom, so applicants will need to be able to access this service. As lockdown restrictions are eased, sessions will be held in-person at the Belgrade Theatre, and so successful candidates will need to be able to travel to the theatre.

We would like to assure all applicants that we will be closely following government health and safety guidelines and all writers chosen will be given a full briefing before the Writers Room begins. Writers will be informed in advanced as to when in-person sessions will begin.
