Romeo and Juliet Co-creation with Coventry’s Communities

In 2022, the Belgrade set out to make theatre in a new way, co-creating an innovative new production of Romeo and Juliet with Coventry’s communities and sharing it with the world.

Premiering in March 2025, this ground-breaking production embodied the Belgrade’s vision of being a people-first theatre, where diversity powers storytelling. Opening to packed houses in Coventry before touring to Bristol and London, the production was seen by over 24,000 people.

Reimagined through the sounds of rap, R&B, and gospel, Romeo and Juliet brought together more than 150 people from across Coventry and beyond. Working at the intersection of education, talent development, community engagement, and artistic innovation, the Belgrade showed what’s possible when creativity is shared and ownership is collective.

From the first idea to the final curtain call, every moment was built through collaboration — reflecting the voices, stories, and energy of the people who shaped it. The impact on everybody associated with the show was profound. From improved school attendance and exam results to increased wellbeing and new career paths, Romeo and Juliet was much more than a show.
