The Belgrade Theatre is committed to providing a range of opportunities to develop the theatre talent of the future.

These range from creative writing courses to Trainee Assistant Director posts, Youth Theatres to Apprenticeships. Be sure to follow us on our FacebookTwitter and Instagram accounts to catch all the latest information. You can also sign up to our Talent Development database.

We want to support local artists to grow and work with artists in partnership with other arts organisations to raise the quality and profile of work being created in the Midlands. We know it’s harder for some than others, and the theatre Industry is disproportionately represented by people who are white, able-bodied and from a narrow range of socio-economic backgrounds, we want to play our part in changing that. It is our ambition to work with and for our artists and communities to move towards the Belgrade being an inclusive theatre.

Autumn Takeover
As part of a longer term ambition to make the Belgrade an Inclusive Theatre, we are offering opportunities for local artists to develop their work in Autumn 2022. It is aimed at those looking to develop a new or existing idea, have limited connection with the Theatre or who have been unable to access talent development opportunities in the past.

Director’s Group
We are partnering with RTYDS and freelance Directors to support the development of a Midlands Director’s Network. The first phase of this sees us work with Directors and Dramaturgs to create a series of self-care workshops for local Directors. Find our more here.

Meet the Artist days
We are introducing ‘meet the artist’ days where the producing and creative team meet local artists and hear about projects they would like to develop or programme. The day offers 45-minute slots throughout the day to sign up and can be in-person or online, with 1pm – 2pm being left open for a more informal hello upstairs in the Belgrade Café. These days will be held in July, October, January, and April each year.

Springboard and Supported artists
In 2015 we established our Springboard initiative, to support early stage companies to develop to the next chapter of their careers over the course of 3 years. Through this initiative we provide rehearsal and performance space, mentoring, support from the Belgrade teams to support organisational development, capacity building and sustainability.

Working with our current cohort of Springboard companies from 2018, the Belgrade recognises these companies’ roles in serving communities we do not, and benefits enormously from the expertise and lived experience they bring to the Belgrade and its staff. Our current Springboard companies include:

Underground Lights       Maokwo       Radical Body       Gertrude       Richard & Rishard

We also have Supported Companies and a growing list of independent and community artists we work with closely across both formal and informal opportunities including:

Ascension Dance

Should you want to talk about any of the above opportunities please contact Hannah Barker on
